NABWIC Plans an Exciting Year Ahead!
“The man who has a Definite Major Purpose in life and a Definite Plan for achieving that purpose has already gone nine-tenths of the distance towards success. ” – Napoleon Hill.

In the spirit of growing leadership, I am reminded of an interview I listened to with John Maxwell, a renowned leadership expert, on the Impact Theory by Tom Bilyeu podcast. He said that sometimes leaders have to leave in order for leaders to lead. That resonated with me as I was torn between attending the NABWIC 2023 Annual Meeting and going on a three-week vacation to Asia. In my absence, our NABWIC leaders led in an awesome way.

As a part of our plans for an exciting new year, it was an honor to attend the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Dorval R. Carter, Jr, President of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and Leslie Richards, General Manager of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) on Monday, January 16, 2023.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Year in Review!
"2022 was a year full of excitement, challenges, triumphs, and failures."

I bring greetings on behalf of the National Association of Black Women in Construction's Board of Directors.

Overall, 2022 was victorious. As I reviewed my excessive notes from a wide array of NABWIC engagements throughout the course of the year, I am encouraged.

Whether it was facilitating sessions to support our members, volunteers, and/or leaders in their ability to navigate our platforms and templates; or coordinating our engagement with USDOT Secretary Buttigieg; it is all forward movement. While many of the fresh ideas I was ever so passionate to champion at the beginning of my term seemed to be beyond our reach, so much growth came from being stretched and pulled into uncharted territory.

NABWIC MEMBERS AND SPONSORS KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR IN ORLANDO WITH ANNUAL RECEPTION

"Tough Times Never Last, but Tough People Do"
--Robert H. Shuller

As we look back in a time of reflection, we can look forward and see that this was one of those years where there were tough times for many and exciting times for others. As we wrap up what has been an immensely difficult year for many around the world in construction, we are happy to bring it to a close.

We want to wish our construction community a Happy New Year and thank you for your year-round support and dedication for the past and the upcoming year.

During this upcoming year, our focus is adding membership value to opportunities created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Justice 40 initiatives. Next year is promising to be the best year ever for our association and partners.

Along with all the new promises that this New Year will bring we continue to pray for love, peace, and prosperity of mind, body, and spirit for you and your family while remembering tough times never last in construction, but tough people do.

As we look back on yesterday, we are reminded that Ecclesiastes 3;15, states the God requires an account of what is past; therefore, our Nabwic Annual Meeting is being held on January 18-20, 2023, in Orlando Florida, this is our call to action, so join us as we celebrate the New Year and give an account of the past year, details at nabwic.org.

SUCCESS IN CONSTRUCTION

It is not enough to have a dream unless you’re willing to pursue it. It is not enough to know what’s right unless you’re strong enough to do it. It’s not enough to learn the truth unless you also learn to live it. It’s not enough to reach for love unless you care enough to give it.  Men who are resolved to find a way for themselves will always find opportunities enough, and if they do not find them they will make them.”
--Samuel Smiles

Welcome and congratulations to all of our new members and strategic partners this month. Please remember to engage with our committees nationally and locally. A special announcement and acknowledgment to our NABWIC Member of the Year, Dominique McNeil who was selected by the national membership. She was also a member of the month.

I am a strong believer in the power of collective ideas to overcome the collective struggles, challenges, trials, and tribulations in the construction industry, because it is not enough to have a dream, unless we as a national organization are willing to pursue it, as shared by Samuel Smiles in his book, Self Help, published in 1859.

Pursuing the dream is where the journey in this industry begins, which is helping our members to build stronger character as we learn to build stronger businesses and more strategic relationships to help and support the growth of the construction industry.

Building more strategic relationships is one of the tools we are using in our toolbox.

For example, in October we participated in the following:

  • Public-Private Partnership in Facilities Conference

  • Public Private Partnerships Nabwic Billion Dollar Luncheon Opportunities

  • The National Chicago Build Expo

CONSTRUCTION TIP OF THE MONTH

1. Review your contracts to ensure it covers you for unexpected supplier delays and material cost increases. COVID-19 has had significant impacts on labor and material availability snd cost, so be sure your contract terms have been updated accordingly.

Tips to Help You be Successful on the Job

2. Avoid projects that are not in line with your portfolio of projects, unless you have taken solid measures to adequately expand your service offerings.

3. Do not overstretch your team. It is better to underpromise and overdeliver. Stretching your team too thin can negatively impact the quality of service you provide.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER AND CHAIR

Powerful Parties with a Purpose and a Plan

“Long-term perspective turns out to be more important than family background, education, race, intelligence, conversations, or virtually any other single factor in determining your success in life and work.” – Dr. Edward C. Banfield

I am reminded of Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech delivered on the 28 th of August, 1963. It best describes why NABWIC goes to Washington, D.C. for the Congressional Black Caucus. King said, “One hundred years later, life and business of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile on his own land. And so, we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition. In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check.”

This is why NABWIC goes to Washington to the Congressional Black Caucus every year. It best describes why NABWIC goes to Washington, our Nation’s Capital to cash in on a four trillion-dollar check.

Our challenge and call to action for you is to connect with us as we continue to help grow your bottom line.

NO MORE TRAUMA
NO MORE TRAUMA IN THIS HOUSE
By Karen Peters, MS | Northeast Florida Area
karenpetersco@gmail.com
It would be considered desecrating and disrespectful for Jews, for example, to live in a home located in Auschwitz and owned by the descendants of Nazis, let alone pay for it. For African Americans, we live, work, play, learn, shop, and even worship in and around the spaces that hold the spiritual imprint of our ancestors' trauma. It has become the norm. In fact, we often struggle, strain, and stress to enter into mortgages [mortgage means "death pledge"] with companies that amassed their wealth and power through enslavement, to pay for said properties. To add further insult to injury, less than 50% of African Americans own our homes, and the remaining non-homeowners spend more than a third of our monthly income on rent.

Change, however, is on the horizon.

CELEBRATING BLACK BUSINESS MONTH

Black Business Month is celebrated in August — it’s a time to acknowledge and appreciate black-owned businesses across the nation and all that they represent in the country’s continual striving for diversity and equality.

In celebration of Black Business Month, the Northeast Area of NABWIC held its Hard Hat and Heels Event at black-owned female restauranteur, Thea Jeffers, owner of Breezy Jazz House. Over 50 guests and members attended the event sponsored by Truist Bank, NABWIC's Bronze Corporate Member.

Businesses had the opportunity to take advantage of Truist products and services and to learn about opportunities at Jaxport.

NABWIC President Tylene Henry attended the opening of an historic black business as Mount Vernon welcomed the nation's oldest minority and woman-owned design and construction firm.

McKissack & McKissack, a 117-year-old company based in New York City and Philadelphia for the past three decades, formally opened its regional office Thursday at 12 East Third St.

NABWIC consistently reinforces and emphasizes the importance of certifications with local, state and federal agencies. Because of NABWIC, I have been careful to acquire and maintain my DBE certifications.

As a result, my company, New City Infrastructure (NCI), was contacted and hired as the engineering consultant for Tampa Int'l Airport. NCI will be providing the design for the replacement of the 16 mile perimeter security fence's access control and card reader system along with security cameras. The project started in July 2022 and documents will be available for bidding February 2023.

Through numerous events and training, both local and nationally, NABWIC provided an opportunity for me to meet a prime contractor that I networked with for 3 years. Eventually, they became interested in not only partnering, but also mentoring my firm WT Stevens Construction, Inc.

Thanks to the tireless work of our chair and our current and past president for assisting WT Stevens Construction in building the relationships that would be necessary to pull this off.

We have now secured two, multi-million dollar contracts to remediate water service lines in the State of Michigan. I am grateful to be a part of this awesome team!

WHY MEMBERSHIP WITH NABWIC?
By Elena Hercule | South Florida Chapter
ehercule@hjconstruction.com

As a NABWIC member, one of the most powerful services that NABWIC provides is that "NABWIC gets you in the room where it happens." What you do once you get in the room and get the contact it's up to you, but many members have been able to leverage that contact and turn them into contracts.

Once you realize that and commit to strategically optimizing the access that NABWIC provides, you're on the up and up.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER AND CHAIR

"THE YOUTH SHALL LEAD US"

Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams and your young men will see visions.“ John 14:26.

As the founder of NABWIC my desire is to build a mindset for success in the construction trades and at all levels in the industry.

NABWIC’s foundation is built upon four pillars.  The first pillar of our foundation is the youth.  NABWIC believes in the development of the next generation of leaders in the construction industry. This also includes training our young people to understand and value things like community service and giving.

We are building the construction pipeline for future generations while helping to inspire, encourage, and uplift younger leaders as entrepreneurs in the construction profession and trades.  We continue to accomplish this through mentorship support and NABWIC Industry and Construction Days programming. We encourage the powerful success principles of 'Doing and Thinking' with The International Masterminders Association (IMA) and creating a financial empowerment mindset through investment club education with Better Investing.

We understand that no matter how we feel about what is happening in the lives of our youth we remain confident in the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt during a critical period in time as he addressed the University of Pennsylvania on September 20, 1940, "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future."

Join us in building a future for our youth as we build a pipeline and a construction workforce for the construction industry, and as we produce productive citizens for our communities overall.

We are so proud of our young people who are making notable strides as they head to higher institutions of learning and out into the world. These young girls are daughters, granddaughters, or associated with NABWIC members. They represent the many youths who are influenced by women in professional careers and the construction industry. The ability to serve often starts at home. Sometimes the youth don't do what you say, they do what you do! NABWIC is all about service and inspiring our community. These inspiring youngsters have extended countless hours into their communities and they are just getting started!

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER AND CHAIR
THE WAKE-UP CALL FOR WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, whom shall I send? Who will speak for us? Then I said, ``Here I am, send me." Isaiah 6:8

The definition of a wake-up call is a person or thing that causes people to become fully alert to an unsatisfactory situation, and to take action to remedy it.

I believe that the Supreme Court overturn of Roe vs Wade, is a wake-up call for all women in construction to look inside and ask what can you do individually and collectively to resolve the problem. To move forward with purpose to protect women’s rights, and to understand that you have the ability to achieve the object of your desire internally, and externally in the construction industry.

As we build our professional careers and businesses, we must answer the wake-up call. As in the words of Isaiah, the question is being asked, who shall speak for us?

Will you say, "Here I am send me?"

As a national organization, we are answering the call by taking our voices to Washington DC in September 2022. Please join us!

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER AND CHAIR

HAPPY JUNETEENTH!

I prayed for freedom for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs."
Fredrick Douglass, Author and Abolitionist.

This month we have a lot of exciting news to share, as NABWIC continues to be the voice of Black women in construction.

We have our virtual NABWIC Billion Dollar Luncheon in Facilities on June 8 th. We are so excited to have Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Ann Arbor Public Schools and Guilford County Public presenting during our luncheon.

This month’s woman in the spotlight is Dicky Sykes, the director of Office of Diversity in Business Practices for the School District of Palm Beach County. Dicky works closely with all the District stakeholders and prime vendors to ensure maximum opportunities and that equity is core principle of the program. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dicky over the years, and she is doing a phenomenal job at the School District of Palm Beach County.

In our efforts to prepare for our 2022 Strategic Planning Meeting in Chicago on June 11th, we continue looking forward to reviewing and revising our strategic plan and recognize that to plan for the future in the construction industry, as we create and become the pipeline, we also have to look back. Looking back, we can see how we helped construct and build this country. Looking forward, we can envision how we would help build for the next century, starting right where we are with a plan.

I want to welcome all of our new members. Welcome to our NABWIC family. Also, thank you to our corporate sponsors such as WSP, AECOM and Hill International. We are not able to do all we do without your generous support.

For a listing of all our chapter and area events, please be sure to visit our website, www.nabwic.org, to keep abreast of what we have going on in your area. We would love to connect with you.

This month we also celebrate Juneteenth, which is a day of remembrance of our rich, African American culture. It is Emancipating Day. On June 19th, 1865, General Order No. 3 was read by Union General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas. The order informed enslaved Africans in American that they were free.

“Every year we must remind successive generations that this event triggered a series of events that one by one defines the challenges and responsibilities of successive generations. That’s why we need this holiday.” Al Edwards, Civil Right Activist and Texas State Representative.

That is why we need this American holiday. Happy Juneteenth!

Spring still looms in the air. Therefore, NABWIC would like to remind you of some brief safety tips so that you can remain prepared on your construction site, with materials and workers. Here are a few tips to remember heading into the warmer months.

1. Make Sure All of Your Heavy Equipment is Read to Go
Heavy equipment may have been largely idle during the long winter months. Thus, they may need a kick-start, to get them back into shape and ready to work. Now is a great time to go through your heavy equipment and perform regular maintenance needs, such as oil changes, fluid top-offs, and cracked parts replacement

2. Weather Conditions & Safety
Spring storms are notorious for appearing out of nowhere, so it's best to have a contingency plan in place that your workers know and can easily implement when the weather takes a turn for the worse. Be mindful of wet conditions when using ladders or working on roofs or scaffolding. Dress in layers that can be removed as the day heats up and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER AND CHAIR
NABWIC SPRINGS INTO ACTION; A TIME TO CREATE, BUILD, and RENOVATE

“You can dream, create, design, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it requires people to make the dream a reality.”
– Walt Disney.

Our focus and desire as contractors are to lay a strong foundation in the construction industry. Henry Kravis, the co-founder of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co., a global investment firm with a market cap of approximately $16.5 billion (as of October 2017) once said, If you build that foundation, both the moral and the ethical foundation, as well as the business foundation, and the experience foundation, the building won’t crumble.”

We are springing into action by introducing our new Nabwic leadership. Click the link to view the entire leadership team. We are excited and thrilled to announce Tylene Henry as NABWIC’S new incoming President as well as all of our 2022 board members.

In other words, as contractors, we must know that the strength of the foundation we lay is pivotal to the structure of any building. We must know that we already possess the ability to finish any building or else the desire to achieve it would not be there. Once you embrace the desire, you must know that you already can bring it into manifestation; however, we must keep in mind that, the strength of a foundation is just as important for the foundation of any organization, association, or corporation (big or small).

world can see the strength, skillset, and tenacity of NABWIC members.

Margaret is personally inviting you to join NABWIC’s next Billion Dollar Luncheon on Wednesday, June 8th. The Billion Dollar Luncheon is the perfect opportunity to get industry knowledge, network, meet other NABWIC members, and possibly score an exceptional business opportunity.
It is that time of year…spring has finally sprung! Springtime may consist of excessive rain, light snow, winds, and heat depending on your location. Don’t let the unpredictable weather bring you equally unpredictable safety hazards that could delay your project. Be mindful and be prepared on your construction site, with materials and workers. Here are a few tips to remember heading into the warmer months.

1. Cushion Your Construction Crews
When the construction season gets in full swing, it’s time to spring into action. Take the winter and spring months to prepare and train crews effectively to ensure they have solid experience and appropriate licenses before things start to take off. Cross-train workers, when possible. Rainy days and allergies could delay your project, so pad your crew to ensure timely completion.
2. Gear Up the PPE
Construction safety equipment is paramount. Spring is an excellent time to go through all of your personal protection equipment (PPE), ensuring they are in good shape or replacing those that are broken, worn, or torn. Spring can bring its own set of hazards to a job site, such as mud from late snow or spring rains that can cause slipping hazards and bog down heavy machinery. Be prepared to avoid getting your heavy equipment stuck in the mud or putting your workers at risk.

3. Invest and Refresh Marketing Techniques
Hire a marketing company or choose to do it yourself (DIY), to ensure you are engaging on social media, updating your website, and even offering spring discounts, and/or deals. Ensure your number is super easy to find. Make your website helpful for visitors and customers. Create and post compelling video content of successful projects.

“Let's Show Up for Black Women in Construction”

“The most disrespected person in America is the Black Woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black Woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black Woman.
- Malcom X

As I listened to the Black women who move the nation at COMTO’s Women Who Move the Nation Breakfast on March 16th, I heard Malcolm X’s words echoed in their speeches and comments, and I felt an urgency to be a bolder, louder voice for Black Women in Construction.

As I listened to Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson's interrogation during the Senate hearings last week and watched her smile in spite of the offensiveness of the situation, Malcolm X’s words echoed in my heart.

Who will demand respect for the Black Woman? Who will protect the Black Woman? Who will address the Black Woman’s disparity? Who will be the voice of the Black Woman in Construction? The answer is, “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”

“We should emphasize not Negro History but the Negro in History.”
Carter G Woodson

As the National Association of Black Women in Construction (NABWIC), we are Black history in the making. By advocating for our rights with legislation and creating the opportunities we seek, we are righting some of the inequities of slavery.  In recent years, the number of black-owned businesses has risen dramatically, with black women fueling much of that growth.

Carter G. Woodson, author of The Mis-Education of the Negro and the father of the Black History Movement, challenges all Black Women in Construction to be taught rather than culturally indoctrinated.  This conditioning causes us to become dependent and to seek inferior places in the greater society, like in the construction industry.

For centuries, Blacks have played a major role in history, and we continue to shape and build world history.  Acknowledge and honor these contributions by starting with yourself, then the contributions of those near you in this construction industry.

As Blacks who build communities and lives, we are the current day pioneers of the future, taking matters into our own hands, building small enterprises that serve and employ other Blacks who continue to support and encourage each other.

Years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a current day Black History Shero, Sheila C. Johnson, co-founder of BET, CEO of Salamander Hotels and Resorts, and the first African American woman to attain a net worth of at least one billion dollars, plus first Black Female developer of major hotel development.  As she shared her trials, tribulations, challenges, and struggles, personally and professionally, she inspired me to persist in the development of NABWIC for the uplifting of Black women and girls to endure and persist in the construction and development of ourselves and our businesses. Our lives and our work must do the same – inspire Black women and girls to continue to make Black history

  SHARE:

MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR AND FOUNDER

NABWIC Brings A Taste of Carolina to the
2022 Annual Meeting and Billion Dollar Luncheon in Transportation Opportunities

"In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure."

When many of us hear the idiom, "A Taste of (something), the term usually brings to mind a strong preference, inclination, or desire to do, taste, or acquire something. It's that "taste" or strong desire that motivates us to achieve.

With a solid history and another year behind us, our organization has already acquired a taste for a transcendent vision. So as we gathered in Raleigh, North Carolina to celebrate our accomplishments, and build on our future strategic goals and objectives, we all had a strong desire to focus on a clear vision and direction for NABWIC's future.

During the month of January, NABWIC had the great pleasure of hosting its 13th National Kick-off Reception and Annual Meeting which included its National Billion Dollar Luncheon in Transportation Opportunities. Hosting the annual meeting in the Tri-State Area was in direct alignment with our mission as one of our strategic goals is to expand into a new area each year.

This year, NABWIC brought a taste of Carolina to our members, stakeholders, sponsors, and transportation officials as we presented contracting opportunities in the transportation industry. We were honored to have guests such as Pete Buttigieg, U. S. Secretary of Transportation, as well as Secretary and Deputy Secretary NC Dept. of Transportation, Eric Boyette and Ebony Pittman.

This year also brought about a change or transition in leadership for NABWIC. For the past eight years our NABWIC President, Kimle Nailer has contributed tremendously towards progressing the NABWIC vision. We cannot thank her enough for her tireless energy, skill, talents, and effective leadership, and for supporting the transition to our new President, Dr. Esther Lambert.

We want to also give a special round of applause to all our special guests, sponsors, stakeholders, and members as they helped us celebrate and expand NABWIC's vision in the Tri-State area.

We trust you will enjoy the photos, videos, and news resulting from this awesome event.

Here's wishing you a successful year as you taste/desire all of the great opportunities that lie in store for each of us!
